Comments: The Hollister was my first ship. Me and 29 other NROTC midshipmen spent the summer of '73 onboard, picking up the ship while it dry-docked in Portland, OR. We called it the "Jolly Holly" and we were rotated through all aspects of the ship while underway. We were 18/19 years old -- and never forgot the spectrum of experience -- from the "gunline" veterans of Vietnam, to the dedicated officers and crew; and to those on board who can only be described as "leadership challenges." That said, we were leaders in the making; we were taking it all in; and the Hollister was a great start.
