Comments: Served aboard the Happy Holly 1977 /1977 . My uncle survived 2 destroyer sinkings during WW2 only to be recalled to active duty for the Korean War. His last ship, my first ship. I reported late on a Friday night on a reserve weekend. Consequently no empty rack thus I can say my first bunk was a hammock in Anchor Windless Room. I was also given swift instruction on my first GQ station. The Peloris Starboard Bridge wing. Of all the instructions . no one told me what standby meant and as luck would have it the first time I witnessed a 5 in 38 gunfire it was a stars hell at night I was cutting my bearings as instructed which at that moment had me looking across the barrel of that gun. The last thing I remember was thinking stand by for what? I woke up on a table on the mess decks being looked over by our corpsman. A shipmate relayed to me I stumbled into the bridge in a daze and as soon as I ran out of sound powered phone cord I dropped like a sack of potatoes.
