Was on the Hollister in 1971-1973. Westpac was an experience of a lifetime. God bless all who were assigned for duty on this remarkable ship.

Take care

Joseph Berken (Little Joe)

Served aboard the Happy Holly 1977 /1977 . My uncle survived 2 destroyer sinkings during WW2 only to be recalled to active duty for the Korean War. His last ship, my first ship. I reported late on a Friday night on a reserve weekend. Consequently no empty rack thus I can say my first bunk was a hammock in Anchor Windless Room. I was also given swift instruction on my first GQ station. The Peloris Starboard Bridge wing. Of all the instructions . no one told me what standby meant and as luck would have it the first time I witnessed a 5 in 38 gunfire it was a stars hell at night I was cutting my bearings as instructed which at that moment had me looking across the barrel of that gun. The last thing I remember was thinking stand by for what? I woke up on a table on the mess decks being looked over by our corpsman. A shipmate relayed to me I stumbled into the bridge in a daze and as soon as I ran out of sound powered phone cord I dropped like a sack of potatoes.

My father, Mark White, who served on Holloster in the early 60's, passed Dec 7 2015. I think it was 61-63. May God bless him and those that have served our country.

Your son, Tim
